An American Soldier’s Journey of Resilience: 3 Combat Tours to Afghanistan in Service to my Great Nation Mission: Operation Enduring FreedomAuthor: Johnathan Kimbrough, MBA, LSSGB, FSQA, HCCP, SQF (DBA Doctor of Business Administration Candidate)IntroductionAs a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, my military career has been defined by three significant deployments to Afghanistan, during which I had the honor of serving alongside dedicated men and women in the 82nd Airborne Division and later with the 3rd Infantry Division. Each deployment presented unique challenges and opportunities for growth, camaraderie, and a deepening understanding of service and sacrifice. This book aims to provide an overview of my experiences during these deployments, highlighting the key events and lessons learned throughout each tour.Military ExperienceSergeant Johnathan Kimbrough, MBAUS ArmyCombat Action Badge – RecipientAfghanistan Campaign Medal (x3)Aug 2003 - Aug 2014 – Time in ServiceFt Bragg, Ft Bliss, Ft Stewart (Conus)Operation Enduring Freedom3 Combat tours - AfghanistanDates Deployed:2006- 15 months (82nd Airborne Division)2010- 12 months (82nd Airborne Division)2012- 9 months (3rd Infantry Division)Careers92A- Automated Logistical Specialist92F- Petroleum Supply Specialist-Convoy Commander-Operations SergeantI oversaw the management of logistics and supplies valued at over $16M and was accountable for the functional expertise in the areas of logistics mobilization and supply management in support of external groups, ensuring the organization’s strategic logistic initiatives were met.Served as the Operations manager providing all aspects of maintenance and logistical and supply chain support, and the health, welfare, and training of up to 500 personnel working around the globe.Supported senior leadership with planning, preparation, and execution of training and operations in support of organizational goals and objectives; analyzed violations of the organizational code of conduct and administered disciplinary actions per published regulations.Managed and led a team of workers, analyzing performance data, and strategizing for the future while performing in high-pressure and often hostile environments; effectively maintained 100% of accountability of all assigned equipment with zero loss.First Deployment: Khost, Afghanistan (82nd Airborne Division)My first deployment to Afghanistan was with the 82nd Airborne Division, where I spent 15 months stationed in Khost Province. Arriving in a foreign land was both exhilarating and daunting. The culture, climate, and landscape were drastically different from what I was accustomed to back home. However, the mission was clear: to support Operation Enduring Freedom and to contribute to the stability of the region.During my time in Khost, I was involved in various operations aimed at countering insurgency and fostering relationships with local communities. Engaging with Afghan nationals was one of the most rewarding aspects of my deployment. We conducted joint patrols and community outreach programs to build trust and cooperation. I witnessed firsthand the impact our presence had in providing security and support to the Afghan people, which fueled my motivation to serve. One of the most challenging aspects of this deployment was dealing with the constant threat of attacks. Each day brought uncertainty, and we learned to rely on one another more than ever. Our bond as a unit grew stronger, and I developed leadership skills that would serve me well in future endeavors.
