BT NOW - Biological Insecticide

BT NOW is a water-based, biological insecticide that utilizes a novel strain of bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki (Btk), to offer targeted control of the caterpillars of certain moths and butterflies on a wide variety of crops. Ingestion of BT NOW paralyzes the insect’s digestive system within hours, halting further crop damage potential. The affected larvae die within 2-5 days.

BT Now can be used to control the following types of Lepidoptera Pests

  • Armyworm
  • Looper
  • Leafroller
  • Skipper
  • Moth
  • Caterpillar
  • Fruitworm
  • Cutworm
  • Hornworm
  • Budworm
  • Webworm

Why BT NOW?

  • Easy to use liquid formulation
  • Four-hour REI — Zero-day PHI
  • Low residue — MRL exempt
  • Can be used in conjunction with many beneficials and pollinators
  • Ideal for IPM programs — Low resistance potential (IRAC GROUP: 11A)
  • Tank-mix compatible with many commonly used pesticides, fertilizers and adjuvants

Active Ingredients

What is BT NOW's mode of action?

The Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki (Btk) bacteria found in BT NOW contains natural insecticidal endotoxins called "cry toxins". When consumed by the larval stage of target lepidoptera pests, these toxins bind to specific receptors in the insect’s gut which immediately disrupts and paralyzes certain digestive functions. After the pest consumes Btk, plant tissue will be protected from further damage as the pest halts all feeding within hours. As the activated toxins disrupt membrane integrity in the caterpillar’s midgut, Btk spores enter the body, proliferate and kill the pest 2-5 days later.

Caterpillar Control in Fall Ornamentals

BT NOW, a water-based product containing a novel strain of Bacillus thuringiensis, effectively targets hatched caterpillars Trichogramma may have missed, giving growers the best chance of a successful harvest. This combination achieves excellent control of caterpillars without harmful residue and without disrupting beneficial insect populations.

BT NOW in a Caterpillar Management Program

BT NOW's Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) strain EVB-113-19 is a novel high-potency strain - at 76 billion Cabbage Looper Units per gallon, the concentration is significantly higher than most Btk products on the market, which matters for efficacy against hard-to-control caterpillar species and in high-pressure situations. Btk works by ingestion only - larvae must eat treated plant tissue to be affected - so timing applications to hatching cycles and ensuring thorough canopy coverage are both critical to program success.

BT NOW works specifically on hatched larvae (which is where AzaGuard's IGR mechanism hands off - AzaGuard disrupts molting, BT NOW targets the actively feeding larval stage). Together they cover caterpillar management from egg hatch through the feeding stages that cause crop damage.
